How to restart a pool in spring?

A well-done spring start-up means a stress-free season. A rushed one means three weeks chasing green water. Here's the method our pool professionals use in the Var, step by step.
When should you restart your pool?
In the Var, the ideal window runs from mid-March to mid-April. The marker: a water temperature above 12 °C for at least 5 days in a row.
Wait longer, and you let algae take the lead: at 15 °C, they get going within a few days.
Step 1 — Remove the cover
Clear out leaves and rainwater before removing it (a sump pump if needed). Clean and dry the cover before storing it: that's 3 extra years of lifespan.
Use this moment to check the fixings, anchors and the cover itself.
Step 2 — Clean and top up the level
- Full brushing of the walls and floor.
- Vacuuming of debris with a robot or manual vacuum.
- Cleaning the waterline, often marked from winter.
- Refilling to the middle of the skimmer.
This is also the moment to deep clean the filter — not just a backwash.
Step 3 — Restart filtration
Before starting the pump:
- Check the pre-filter and its seal.
- Open the valves in the right order (suction before return).
- Re-prime the pump if it was drained.
Run it 24 hours continuously the first day, then go back to a normal cycle based on temperature.
Step 4 — Treat and balance
1. pH first: adjust it between 7.2 and 7.6 (see water balance). 2. Shock treatment with unstabilised chlorine to make up for winter. 3. Preventive anti-algae treatment straight after. 4. Stabiliser if needed.
48 hours later, run a full check again. If everything's clear, swimming can resume.

Start my diagnosisFrequently asked questions
How much does a spring pool start-up cost in the Var?+
€219 all-inclusive, a fixed price announced before the visit. A rushed start-up easily costs double in follow-up fixes over the following weeks.
How long before you can swim?+
Allow 3 to 5 days after the start-up, the time it takes for the shock treatment to work and the pH to settle.
Can you restart a pool yourself?+
Yes, for a simple pool that was properly winterised. For a pool coming out of passive winterising or with a complex plant room, calling in a professional avoids most costly mistakes.
My water stays green after the start-up, what should I do?+
Check the pH first, then clean the filter. If it persists, an at-home [water quality check](/interventions/controle-qualite-eau) fixes the problem in a single visit.
